Inspired by...

Several York Art Society members were so inspired by a recent demonstration by artist Heather Dixon, they decided to dig out some palette knives and a canvas to have a go at painting in this style.

Tim Boss gave members a quick refresher on what to do whilst painting a seascape in this way. All members agreed it was a great way to loosen up their style and always good to try something new.

Lost umbrella

Did you lose an umbrella at the De Grey Rooms? It's a large black umbrella with a wooden handle. Please speak to Tim Boss or a committee member at the next meeting.

YORK OPEN STUDIOS

Fiona Sheehan will be exhibiting alongside Julie Lightburn, at her Studio on the Bull Centre, next to Dean’s Garden Centre, Stockton-on-the-Forest – venue 67.

Fiona uses the same acrylic medium as Julie uses for her landscape paintings, but in a completely different way.  Her textured semi abstract work is an interesting contrast to Julie’s finely detailed work. Julie also has a number of pastel landscapes this year.

They’ll both be delighted to show you their work and answer any questions.
There’ll also be homemade cake as usual!

204th Exhibition - Easter 2017

The 204th Exhibition at the De Grey Rooms, York is well underway with a great turnout of over 200 paintings.
Thank you to all members who entered and who volunteered to help out during the course of the exhibition.
The Preview Night was a great success, launched by Jonathan Newdick, Sculptor and Lecturer at York College, who identified and selected his choice paintings and gave some positive feedback. Born in Yorkshire, Jonathan has been making sculpture for over 30 years and was elected a member of the Royal British Society of Sculptors in 2004. Jonathan works from his studio in York carving sculptures in wood, stone and bronze. Known for designing and sculpting York's famous cat sculptures, Jonathan is also creating semi-abstract and figurative sculptures for public and private commissions to be sited both at home in the UK and more distant locations, in America, Scandinavia and India.
Finally, congratulations to York Art Society member Shirley Davis-Dew whose painting was selected as the overall favourite, by members present.

All unsold work can be collected no earlier than 4pm on Easter Monday. You may also want to visit the York Shambles Art Market on the same day.

Self Help Group - Saturday 22 April

A reminder the next Self-Help workshop will take place this Saturday 22 April 10am - 4pm in Bishopthorpe. £6 each for the hire of the space, which includes free tea, coffee and biscuits!
You may paint anything of your choosing, in preparation for the next exhibition in September. Or, you may have been inspired by the recent artist demonstration by Heather Dixon who used acrylic with palette knives to paint a landscape! Some of the members have set themselves a challenge to have a go with this technique, so, if you have some palette knives which you never used before lying in a box in the cupboard, then dig them out and have a go!
