Sue Ford Workshop

Our recent Sue Ford Collage Workshop on 3rd June was a great success.

13 members turned up laden with magazines and acrylic paints and were guided through the process of creating a collage painting with Sue's expert advice. Not much talking took place as we were all out of our comfort zone and all that could be heard was the ripping of magazines. Time passed so quickly and in our enthusiasm, some of us missed a proper lunch break.

Thank you to the members that took part in The Challenge!

Some great pieces were produced.  Not all were finished on the day, but hopefully we will see some of them as completed work in the next exhibition at the Medical Rooms in September.

If you wish to see more of Sue's own work, she will be exhibiting at The Danby Moors Centre National Park, between June 29th and July 25th. Open daily 10 to 4pm

Inspired by...

Several York Art Society members were so inspired by a recent demonstration by artist Heather Dixon, they decided to dig out some palette knives and a canvas to have a go at painting in this style.

Tim Boss gave members a quick refresher on what to do whilst painting a seascape in this way. All members agreed it was a great way to loosen up their style and always good to try something new.

Lost umbrella

Did you lose an umbrella at the De Grey Rooms? It's a large black umbrella with a wooden handle. Please speak to Tim Boss or a committee member at the next meeting.

Luisa Holden opens studio to public

204th Exhibition - Easter 2017

The 204th Exhibition at the De Grey Rooms, York is well underway with a great turnout of over 200 paintings.
Thank you to all members who entered and who volunteered to help out during the course of the exhibition.
The Preview Night was a great success, launched by Jonathan Newdick, Sculptor and Lecturer at York College, who identified and selected his choice paintings and gave some positive feedback. Born in Yorkshire, Jonathan has been making sculpture for over 30 years and was elected a member of the Royal British Society of Sculptors in 2004. Jonathan works from his studio in York carving sculptures in wood, stone and bronze. Known for designing and sculpting York's famous cat sculptures, Jonathan is also creating semi-abstract and figurative sculptures for public and private commissions to be sited both at home in the UK and more distant locations, in America, Scandinavia and India.
Finally, congratulations to York Art Society member Shirley Davis-Dew whose painting was selected as the overall favourite, by members present.

All unsold work can be collected no earlier than 4pm on Easter Monday. You may also want to visit the York Shambles Art Market on the same day.

Self Help Group - Saturday 22 April

A reminder the next Self-Help workshop will take place this Saturday 22 April 10am - 4pm in Bishopthorpe. £6 each for the hire of the space, which includes free tea, coffee and biscuits!
You may paint anything of your choosing, in preparation for the next exhibition in September. Or, you may have been inspired by the recent artist demonstration by Heather Dixon who used acrylic with palette knives to paint a landscape! Some of the members have set themselves a challenge to have a go with this technique, so, if you have some palette knives which you never used before lying in a box in the cupboard, then dig them out and have a go!

We have an exciting programme of weekend art workshops, covering a range of subject matter and mediums, taught by artists from all over the UK. Some of them you may be familiar with from the SAA for example Marilyn Allis, John Glover, Malcolm Cudmore, Kevin Scully and John Tookey, to mention a few.

You can see all of our courses and tutors by visiting our website HERE

Our main studio has big windows bringing in lots of natural light. We are fully equipped with wooden standing easels, table top easels and drawing boards. A two course lunch, all refreshments and afternoon tea are included in the price of the weekend courses.

Publicising our Spring Exhibition

By now members of the Art Society will have received some A5 fliers for our up and coming exhibition at the De Grey Rooms next month. We would be most grateful if you could pin these up on your local noticeboards, leave them in your local shops, hairdressers, doctors waiting rooms etc, as well as handing them out to friends and family.

The exhibition committee will be distributing them to tourist venues within the centre of York, but we have plenty to go round, so do pick some more up from the demo on Saturday.  The more we can spread the word, the more visitors we'll get to view all of the wonderful paintings we'll have on display.

Other ways you can help publicise the exhibition are by spreading the word via social networking, and for the more old fashioned of us, you could try asking to put an article in any newsletters distributed in your area (like church parish magazines, school handouts, village newsletters etc).

You can download the poster  to use in emails or to print at home if you can't collect the pre-printed fliers.

Many thanks for all your help,

Julie Lightburn,
Exhibition Committee Volunteer
