This February the Eleanor Worthington Prize returns for its second year in the UK. The Prize has been established in memory of Eleanor Worthington. Some drawings by Eleanor are shown in the gallery entrance.

The theme of this year’s Prize is the “International Day of Persons with Disability”.  You can see more at http://www.premioeleanor.it/ and www.schoolhousegallery.co.uk

The exhibition runs from Wednesday 24th to Saturday 27th inclusive and is open from 11am to 6pm on each of those days.

The whole event kicks off with a preview evening between 6:00pm and 8:00pm on Tuesday 23rd. York Art Society members are warmly invited to attend.

New website from Bernadette Oliver

YAS member Bernadette Oliver has just launched her new web site.  You can access this by following the link below (or from the Artist Links panel on the right hand side of each blog post).

The 203rd York Art Society Exhibition

We're pleased to announce that this year's exhibition will take place between Monday 18th and Sunday 24h July 2016.  The venue is the De Grey Rooms in St. Leonard's Place, York (just opposite the Art Gallery and next to the Theatre Royal).

As in previous years, members are invited to submit up to three original pieces of art.  There will also be an opportunity to sell cards, prints and unframed originals at the event. The official entry forms will be available shortly.

The success of this event very much depends on the enthusiasm and contributions of all Society members, so please consider how you can help - perhaps in the setting up or dismantling of boards or by taking a turn in stewarding during the week.

More details will be published as they are finalised.  These will be announced on-line and at the regular monthly meeting

York Open Studios 2016

York Open Studios returns for Spring 2016, spanning two weekends in April. This is a great opportunity to visit local artists in their homes and studios to explore  their work and, in some cases, enjoy live demonstrations and workshops.

There are almost 100 artists taking part this year, many of them for the first time.  Among these new artists are three members of York Art Society - Shannon Morgan, Glynis Learmonth and Bernadette Oliver.

Julie Lightburn will be showing her work in her studio at Stockton on the Forest (next to Dean's Garden Centre) and giving demonstrations on both weekends.

The official site for YOS 2016 has just launched.  You can find it at this link where you can read about all of the participating artists

February Demonstration

The February meeting and demonstration will take place at Christ Church Hall, Stockton Lane, York on Saturday 13th February.

This month our guest artist is Paul Talbot Greaves.  Paul is known for his bold watercolour landscapes that are inspired by the rugged scenery of the South Pennines where he makes his home.

You can see samples over at his own site http://www.talbot-greaves.co.uk/

The demonstration runs from 2:00pm to 4:30pm as usual, with a short intermission for refreshments,  Free entry for members, £5 cover charge for guests.

Steve Garnett will also be attending with a selection of frames and mounts for sale.

2016 /2017 Membership Renewal

A gentle reminder from Linda Sturgeon that membership renewal for the coming year is due on the 1st of April ( and, no, that's not an April Fool).

The fees have once again been held at £37.00.  These can be paid to Linda by cash or cheque at either the February or March demonstrations. Cheques should be made payable to York Art Society.

Alternatively you can post directly to Linda at 18 Common Road, Dunnington, York YO19 5NG. Please state your full name, membership number and current address in any correspondence.

Please do not send cash in the post as York Art Society will not be responsible if that goes astray.

Your annual fee gives you free attendance to the 10 demonstrations held every year and also allows participation in other society activities.  Despite continually rising operational and administrative charges, we're pleased to say that this is the 5th consecutive year that we have been able to avoid passing those costs directly onto our membership.

A full 2016 / 2017 programme will be published shortly.
